Local film festival scares up a respectable following. Last year saw the inception of San Diego’s first film festival dedicated to macabre cinema and art. The response was so overwhelmingly positive that a second year was a certainty. On November 4th and 5th, Horrible Imaginings Film Festival expands to two days of film and art, including short films, animated shorts, music videos and feature films, as well as a haunted gallery of dark or macabre art. The 10th Avenue Theatre and Arts Centre at 930 10th Avenue in downtown San Diego will host this event of thrills and chills. Horrible Imaginings is the brainchild of Monster Island Resort Podcast host Miguel Rodriguez. “It has become clear that the horror genre is something that can be embraced and understood by San Diego audiences,” Rodriguez said. “It is healthy to explore and express the dark parts of our psyche through the safe forum that film and art offers us. This genre has as much to offer as any other.” Horrible Imaginings Film Festival will continue the dual mission of bringing exposure to promising new filmmakers, while reviving classic films that many people may not have seen. This mission ensures a comprehensive exploration [...]

In a world of Madoffs and rip-offs, wary (and weary) consumers still need financial advice. Jim Lingelbach. Crisis. It’s the mot de choix of just about everyone describing the financial state of the world over the last year, and California has been one of the favorite targets of pity. Dealing with that crisis has virtually supplanted baseball as America’s favorite pastime and the soldiers on the front lines have been the financial advisers who guide their clients through the rough and foamy seas of financial tempests. How have these wealth advisers fared in dealing with their clients? How have their clients fared? Most are upbeat yet cautious, which seems to be the favorite phrase in dealing with the financial situation, as well. “I think we did an exceptional job in that only a couple (clients), very few actually, melted down and got out of the market at the wrong time,” says Judy Hagar, CFP of Wolters, Hagar & Pratt, Financial Planning Inc., who also serves as the director of public awareness for the San Diego branch of the Financial Planning Association. “They’re probably still quaking at this point but for the most part we kept them from making the fatal [...]

San Diego doesn’t often come to mind when counting the world’s fashion Meccas. Yet on a Saturday night in Fashion Valley (of course), one could see a fashion show as vogue and vibrant as could be expected in New York or Italy. The Annual Golden Hanger Fashion Awards Gala presents the latest work from the students of San Diego’s Fashion Careers College, and after more than two decades of showcasing their talent, these fashion apprentices seem to have hit their stride. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, FCC unveiled its 23rd annual awards gala raising money for Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego and Variety Children’s Lifeline. Hosted by KUSI news anchor Sandra Maas, the gala featured local San Diego celebrity models Shally Zomorodi of Fox 5, KUSI Style Guy Leonard Simpson of Fashion Forward, KGTV 10 weather personality Kerstin Lindquist, and Make-A-Wish Foundation Community Development Manager Alex Cano as they accompanied Make-A-Wish children-turned-models down the runway. Youngsters such Noah Virissimo and Ashleigh Wojcik sported creations tailored to their childhood desires yet with a decidedly fashionable flair. Working the runway with charm and innocence, the kids brought the show to a standstill as guests swarmed the catwalk to stuff the circulating donation box [...]

It’s another beautiful summer afternoon in Kensington and Darlene Love is fighting off bronchitis. Yet she steps off the porch of her home with élan, accompanied by her dogs, Lou and Orson. Sick or no, Love will not be deterred from talking about and walking about her favorite neighborhood in San Diego. “Whether a person lives here six minutes or six years, no matter how long, you feel as much a part of Kensington as anyone,” says Love with pride and… well… love. She was raised and spends her days in this little community at the southeast end of Mission Valley. Darlene Love was born Darlene Baumann on an Autumn Wednesday in 1946, making her a founding member of the baby boomers. She was brought to her home on Adams Avenue in Kensington, a San Diego neighborhood that’s been in her blood since before that day she was born. Her father, Thomas Baumann, was a navy man. He lived his college days with his wife, Ruth, during the Great Depression and, like so many others, they were quite poor in their early years. She made a living as a teacher while he attended USC to become a dentist. To avoid [...]

I have a secret to tell you, only I can’t. The secret curator of Secret Cinema won’t let me. Why all the secrecy? “I prefer to remain anonymous to preserve the mystique,” the curator said. Secret Cinema is a society of sorts that meets every other Sunday at the Media Arts Center in Golden Hill to watch a movie. The hitch is that audience members don’t know what the movie will be until they see the title during the opening credits. However, a mysterious e-mail that provides clues to the film arrives to members a few days before the screening. The point of all this clandestinity is to bridge the gap between those who fancy themselves film aficionados and those who are more or less film novices, the curator said. “One of the main goals is that people have film be a communal experience that matters in a publicly intellectual sort of way,” the curator said. The evolving trend of watching movies at home is one of the things that inspired this movie-watching community. “I grew up in the (Landmark) Ken Cinema, and that’s where I learned to know everything I needed about life,” the curator said. With Secret Cinema, [...]
